Item Number: T13

Initially, African art objects depicting spirits, deities, royalties, and daily living utensils were considered primitive by western observers. But as more of these primitive art objects began to reach Europe by way of Exploration and colonization of Africa, it gradually influenced the work of European artist. Prominent among the European artists who were inspired by African art objects, was Pablo Picasso. By his own admission, it was a collection of African arts he bought in Paris, France in the late 19th century that influenced a period of his works known as the “African Period.” Works of art generated by European artists at this time were collectively referred to as modernist while the genesis of it was referred to as primitive. It begs the question why? At Chikodili.com, we have tried to recapture in digital format the value of these art objects to make it available as decorative items and wearable art on t-shirts. We hope by acquiring it, you too, can help us make the claim that they are by no means primitive. As a matter of fact they represented a higher form of intelligence by their original creators.
